Protecting People: Artificial Intelligence and Human Security
Artificial Intelligence is set to have a profound impact on international security and is already being incorporated into military systems, cyber defence, and national policy frameworks around the world. While much of the focus in the academic literature has been on defending the state from malicious applications of AI and in examining the implications of AI for economic affairs, there has been less attention to how people might be subjected to a variety of harms resulting from the use and misuse of AI technologies. Protecting people, groups and societies will be an important part of how AI security is defined, understood and developed in the 21st Century, especially as the technology itself becomes more mature and sophisticated. The relationship between AI and Human Security has obvious policy salience, moreover, including for international organisations, such as the UN and EU, which are developing new frameworks to regulate and govern AI technologies. Drawing on the Human Security concept, this online workshop will explore how the use and misuse of AI affects people, their safety, security and wellbeing.
